Frequently Asked Questions
A living FAQ page covering the most common questions we get asked about Framer — and more.
What are the advantages of using Framer over a custom codebase approach?
There are several reasons why Framer can be a better choice compared to a traditional custom codebase approach.
▸ The first is that you're not responsible for managing the site's infrastructure. By hosting with Framer, all the maintenance work happens behind the scenes — you don't have to think about it.
▸ Framer gives you a single platform to design, build, and manage your site's content via CMS. Having everything in one place is a significant advantage over a more fragmented traditional approach, which typically involves multiple tools and steps. Another important aspect is the ability to use AI natively — either through Framer Agents or external LLM connections like Claude Code, Codex, and more. AI is worth mentioning here because within Framer you can concretely use it to build things, and in some cases ship entire sites.
▸ Perhaps the most notable advantage over a traditional approach is Framer's user-friendly UI, which allows anyone to manage site content without technical knowledge or coding skills. This is a major benefit for non-technical founders and marketing teams, who no longer need to depend on a developer every time they want to make a change — significantly speeding up the process.
These are just the highlights, but there are many other advantages worth mentioning: the performance of Framer-built sites and the SEO benefits that come with it, the availability of support (largely absent with a traditional approach), and the overall ease of use — though it's worth noting that actually creating content in Framer does require a basic familiarity with the tool.
What are the disadvantages of using Framer compared to a traditional approach?
Like any website builder, the main disadvantages of Framer come with the territory of using a closed platform. You can't migrate your site or content elsewhere if you ever want to move — what you build in Framer, stays in Framer.
Cost is another consideration. As covered in the previous section, depending on your setup a traditional stack can be cheaper, or even free.
Finally, Framer is still a niche tool, which means finding an experienced Framer specialist is harder than finding a Next.js developer. That said, with a traditional approach you typically need both a developer and a designer — making the search arguably more complex than finding a single Framer professional who covers both.
How does Framer's cost compare to a traditional stack?
It depends on your setup, but here's a realistic comparison.
A traditional approach — say, a frontend on Vercel with a headless CMS like Sanity — can range from $0/month (both have free tiers) up to $30–50/month once you add paid plans for hosting and content management. A custom domain adds roughly $10–15/year regardless of the stack.
Framer ranges from €10/month (Basic) to €30/month (Pro), plus the same domain cost.
So on paper, the numbers are similar — and in some configurations, a traditional stack can actually be cheaper or even free.
The real difference is what's included in that price. With Framer, hosting, CMS, staging, and a visual editor are all in one place. With a traditional stack, you're stitching tools together — which works well if you have a developer, but adds friction if you don't.
Neither approach is inherently cheaper. It comes down to your team, your workflow, and how much you value having everything in one place.
Additional note on Framer pricing: discounts and startup programs
One aspect worth mentioning is that Framer offers several discounts and incentive programs that can significantly reduce the cost of using the platform, particularly during the first year.
At the time of writing, the following options are available:
▸ The framer25influencer coupon code provides 25% off the Basic plan for the first year.
▸ The partner25proyearly coupon code provides 25% off the Pro plan for the first year.
▸ Framer is free for the first year for pre-seed and seed-stage startups backed by approved partners. A full list of approved partners is available on Framer’s website, along with details about the startup program itself.
▸ Framer is free for students throughout their period of study.
While these programs don’t fundamentally change the long-term cost comparison between Framer and a traditional stack, they can make the platform considerably more attractive for startups, founders, and students who are just getting started.
Can a Framer website be managed by someone without coding knowledge?
Absolutely.
Framer was originally created as a tool for designers, and to this day a large portion of its user base consists of people with little to no coding experience. One of the platform’s main strengths is its visual interface, which allows users to manage and update websites without touching code.
It’s worth distinguishing between building a website and managing one. Creating new pages, designing layouts, setting up CMS collections, or implementing more advanced functionality does require some familiarity with Framer and its features, while common tasks such as updating copy, publishing blog posts, replacing images, adding CMS content, or making routine content changes can typically be handled without any technical background.
For this reason, Framer is particularly well-suited to founders and marketing teams who want to remain independent for day-to-day website management without relying on a developer for every small update.
Can I manage my Framer website using Claude Code or other LLMs?
Yes.
Claude Code, Codex, and other AI coding agents can be used to create and manage Framer websites. Thanks to Framer’s native integrations, it’s possible to build workflows that start inside an LLM and ship updates directly to Framer without ever touching the canvas.
This can be used for a wide range of tasks, from updating content and creating pages to building entire sections or, in some cases, complete websites.
While some familiarity with Framer remains helpful, AI tools are rapidly lowering the barrier to managing and developing websites on the platform.
How does Framer perform from an SEO perspective?
Framer is an excellent platform for SEO.
Because Framer manages the technical infrastructure behind the scenes, websites tend to load very quickly — an important factor for both user experience and search rankings.
The platform also includes many of the technical SEO fundamentals out of the box, such as customizable metadata, clean URLs, redirects, sitemap generation, and structured data support.
Of course, good SEO depends on far more than the platform itself. Content quality, keyword strategy, internal linking, and backlinks remain the primary drivers of organic growth. Framer won’t automatically improve your rankings, but it does provide a strong technical foundation to build upon.
Framer has also published a comprehensive SEO guide that covers many of the platform’s SEO capabilities and best practices in greater detail.
Is Framer only suitable for small sites?
Framer works well for both small and large sites, and offers interesting advantages in both cases. For smaller sites, the ability to ship a production-ready site relatively quickly and with everything included out of the box. For larger ones, the flexibility of having design, content, and publishing all in one place — keeping product, marketing, and other teams aligned without fragmentation. On the enterprise side, it's worth noting that Framer is used by companies like Microsoft, DoorDash, the NBA, Zapier, and many others.
